Psychotherapy for Adolescents

The teenage years can be the most challenging time in a person’s life.  It is a time of transition that can feel very isolating and frustrating. There are also so many emotional, physical, and social changes that can often lead to anxiety, depression, and disordered eating. At Shine Therapy and Coaching, we are skilled at understanding the developmental stage of adolescents and want to support the individual in navigating through the rapidly changing dynamics of their teenage years. Finding the right therapist who can meet your needs is essential for your therapeutic and personal growth. We can help! We understand the importance of the therapeutic relationship, especially in adolescents, and truly value the connection and change to create a centered approach to navigating life’s challenges.

Attending therapy either online, on the phone, or in person can provide a safe, confidential space where you can explore your feelings and thought patterns. Therapy can help with family conflicts, identity concerns, depression, trauma, self-harm, and body image issues and disorders. Therapy can also help with future planning and time management. Sessions typically last about 50 minutes, and your therapist will guide you in a process of self-exploration that will help you to manage everyday challenges. The tools you will develop will help in this phase of life as well as the future.

We work with each individual in person in our office in Natick, MA, or remotely, depending on your preference. During the initial meetings, we will create individualized treatment plans to meet your therapeutic needs. We view therapy as a partnership where we utilize skills such as CBT, DBT, solution-focused, client-centered, EMDR, and trauma-informed models to assist you in your therapeutic journey. Your individual therapist will help you develop concepts that work for you.

How Therapy Can Help Adolescents:

Emotion Regulation:
Therapy can support teens in managing overwhelming emotions. If you find yourself getting overly upset or hurt by situations, therapy can help you address these feelings in the moment and develop healthier coping strategies.

Improved Self-Esteem:
Therapy can address issues such as body image, peer pressure, and academic stress. It can boost a teen’s confidence and help build a stronger sense of self-worth.

Relationship Building:
Therapy provides a safe space to work through conflicts and challenges in relationships—with friends, peers, romantic partners, or family. The process helps teens develop stronger interpersonal skills and navigate social dynamics more effectively.

Academic Stress:
Therapy can ease the pressure related to school by introducing tools such as deep breathing exercises or personalized time management plans. These techniques promote self-compassion and reduce feelings of being overwhelmed.

Addictive Behavior Patterns:
Whether it’s struggles with eating habits or substance use (like drugs or alcohol), therapy can help explore the underlying thought patterns and emotional triggers, guiding teens toward healthier ways of managing emotions.

Decreased Anxiety and Depression:
Adolescents often experience cycles of anxiety or depression that can make daily life feel overwhelming. Therapy offers practical tools to manage these feelings and face each day with greater resilience and less fear.

Seeking Support Is a Strength, Not a Weakness

It is important to note that sometimes people can feel that going to therapy means they are broken but getting help shows courage. Life is hard for everyone and it is important that you have a space to adequately process the challenges. It is also important to know that the therapeutic space is confidential and will not be shared with anyone expect in cases of self-harm and or danger. Addressing your mental health concerns in a space private space can enhance your life and understanding of self and overall mental health. You deserve to feel good!
